Having not seen Emily for awhile we decided to treat ourselves to a night of decadence and on Thursday evening I booked a table at Tower 42. Formerly the NatWest Tower, the top floor is now a Champagne Bar right in the heart of the city with amazing Panoramic views from the 42nd floor.
We sat and sipped on Champagne and tucked into some delicious appetisers as we enjoyed a good catch up and the wonderful views of the Square Mile and beyond. There is something truly magical about how London looks when it is all lit up and twinkling like some sort of Christmas card scene.
Friday I came home and changed and made my way to Stephs in Kent. We had dinner together and a fairly early night as on Saturday we were up early to make our way to Dover. We had booked onto the 1130AM crossing over to Calais on our now annual Booze Cruise. Couldn’t believe the deal we got in the end. £19 for car and up to 9 passengers plus we got six bottles of free Californian wines provided we collected them on the outbound journey.
Found a nice little place in Calais that lets you try the wine before you buy so you actually know what you are buying rather than guessing from the look of a bottle. We sampled about 12 different wines and the guy was both knowledgeable and helpful, which resulted in us stocking up our trolley full of the various wines we wanted to bring home. Some real bargains for some quality wines.
Once we had the wines all sorted we headed to the hypermarket and could concentrate on all the yummy foods. Well you can’t visit France and not bring home some real Croissants or Pan au Chocolate can you? Plus there was the Cheese, the Bread, the sweets and why is it that you can’t get vegetables that size over here? They had Leeks that were almost 3 feet long, Peppers the size of Grapefruits. We stocked up on all that we fancied and had time to nip to a restaurant where we had Buffalo Burgers (yummy, though not particularly French).
Finally we got back to the port and made the journey home. Lovely but long day and a lot of driving. Amazed me that the ferry takes 90 minutes each way for a short journey like that. We spent as long driving and on the Ferry as we did in France. But all in all a fab day out. Thanks a million to Steph for letting me stay over and for doing the driving.
