I think I must have been one of the very few gay people on the planet who had never visited Gran Canaria or any of the Canary Islands so when we decided for a May Break, it seemed to be the ideal place to go. Some 1000 miles south of Europe and about 100 miles off the west coast of Morocco we decided to head there for the tail end of Gran Canaria Pride. Would have gone for the whole of Pride if it had not been for 2 colleagues at work already booking the same week off (How very dare they!).
Due to Pride our first choice of resorts were all full so settled for the Hotel Catarina just 2 minutes from the beach on the main strip. A four star, Air Conditioned Hotel which was half board.
I swear, considering it was a straight resort, you have never seen so many gay people in your life. Sat in the restaurant at dinner virtually 75% of people were gay couples. Sat amongst the remaining 25% of German pensioners. Will definitely return and stay at a Gay Resort.
The Island is small but none the less stayed at the souther resort of Playa das Ingles, famous for its Sand Dunes and the Yumbo shopping centre. A 1960s shopping complex by day and filled with gay bars & clubs at night.
The weather was a barmy 30 Degrees most days with near perfect blue skys. On the Monday while enjoying a drink at Construction Bar, Gavin & Martin stopped to say hello. Not seen either at home in months, but lovely to run into them again.
Meanwhile, back at home the weather followed us. Its been 30 degrees here in London over the weekend, although has cooled a little yesterday. Seems quite tropical and reminds me of Florida, leaving for work knowing that the 20 degree heat at 7AM is the all day low. Marvellous.
Will definitely be heading back to GC, if for nothing for the weather. Infact I think my remaining holidays this year will be spent on the sunny Isle. Gran Canaria in Sept/ Nov & Feb anyone? :-)
