When my boss first said he was thinking of becoming a Spinning Instructor I thought, that sounds like fun. I have afterall always enjoyed excercise classes and love the fact that you get a full 45 minute workout with the all the fun of group participation. Its certainly much easier to do a class than to spend 45 minutes, self motivated, on all the cardio machines.
So at the time it seemed quite normal to say to Ian, If you do it, I'll do it with you.
Having read the pre-course homework (Excercise Phyiology), the weekend course rapidly came around. It didn't help that just days earlier I had a fairly nasty fall and was somewhat grazed and bruised.
Arriving at 9AM, Saturday Morning at the Virgin Health Club, Broadgate, was quite unnerving. I met up with Ian and we went in together.
The group was made up of 23 students, most of whom were either Personal Trainers or existing excerise to music instructors. I think Ian and I felt a bit like fish out of water and was dreading them asking the group, what do you do for a living? That said it seemed we knew a fair bit and that the pre course work that was required for non fitness industry participants gave us a heads up and ready to partake.
I have to confess, as the course started and our instructor, Sandro, stated he would be assessing us all and has on occasion had to fail a number of participants. I actually said to myself, I was there for the fun of it and to learn how to do it. Its not like I have a club to potentially teach in.
After 4 lectures, 3 classes and some group excercises we had to take the bull by the horn and teach a group and believe it or not, we both passed :-).
There is an amazing sense of self achievement when you set your mind to something and go out and get it. Especially when the goal seems so hard to achieve. 48 Hours later and a lot of sweat I have my certification.
Amazingly, on coming home I discovered that our residents Gym has just bought six Spinning bikes for the new extension! Now at least I can go over to the gym and practice with my Ipod. Amazing how fate turns out sometimes eh?
