I know one should not discuss politics amongst friends but I have to have a channel to vent my thoughts one way or another.
Today the news over all the headlines is that Britons are drinking way too much and many do not realise how many units they are drinking every week. But the same people that are telling us that we are drinking too much are the ones that are driving us to drink. The politicians.
In 2008 Britons are paying almsot the same levels of tax as in Victorian days. The cost of fuel and foods are increasing seemingly week by week and all the time they are taxing us more and more.
Take fuel tax for example. Its not a set amount but a percentage so now that the cost of petrol has doubled so has the amount that the dear treasury take. Its about 75% of the value you pay at the pump. Now maybe I am wrong in my thinking but surely this tax is one of the causes of the entire cost of living rising? Surely if they reduced the burden on fuel, especially on freight fuel, the cost of foods could actually come down. Perhaps we could end up with foods costing something more similar to those in the United States?
Meanwhile Gas & Electricity are due to rise again and yet they tell us that the official inflation rate is only really 2.5%.
I put this to you, is it actually not fact that the reason that Britons are choosing to drink more and more is actually caused by the fact that every single aspect of life is now being monitored in a big brother State.
People cant smoke in public any longer, they cant afford to heat their homes and thanks to airport tax costing as much as flight to Europe they cant afford holidays as much as they used to. The only person that seems to be benefiting is the treasury and meanwhile we the people are left to do what? The same thing that we have done in this country for hundreds of years. Even back in the days of Robin Hood the people of Briton have enjoyed their drink. Tax it as you might Mr Brown, we will have some vices in life even if you tax us to death.
